OpenAI API Setup

OpenAI is optional in Yur Home™. On supported devices, Apple Intelligence can analyze photos on-device with no API key. Follow these steps if you want to use your own OpenAI account.

Bring your own key Yur Home never supplies an OpenAI key. You create and pay for API usage directly with OpenAI. Your key is stored in the iOS Keychain on your device.

1. Create or sign in to OpenAI

Visit the OpenAI Platform and sign in, or create an account if you do not have one.

2. Set up billing

API usage is billed by OpenAI (not through the App Store). Open Set up billing on the OpenAI platform and add a payment method. You can also set usage limits so charges stay within a budget you choose.

3. Create an API key

Go to platform.openai.com/api-keys.
Click Create new secret key.
Give the key a name you will recognize (for example, Yur Home).
Copy the key immediately — OpenAI will not show the full secret again.

4. Add the key in Yur Home

Open Yur Home and go to the Settings tab.
Under OpenAI, paste your API key into the field.
Tap Save API Key. The key is stored securely in your device Keychain.

5. Choose how analysis runs

In Settings → Photo Analysis, pick an analysis mode:

Automatic (recommended) — uses Apple Intelligence on supported iPhones and iPads, then falls back to OpenAI if a key is saved, otherwise on-device Vision assist.
Apple Intelligence — on-device only; no OpenAI key required on supported hardware.
OpenAI — always sends the photo to OpenAI using your key.

6. Pick a vision model

Still in Settings, under Model:

GPT-4o mini — recommended for faster, lower-cost inventory scans.
GPT-4o — stronger visual reasoning when you want more detail.

7. Analyze a photo

On the Add tab, take or choose a photo, then tap Analyze Photo. Review the suggested items, edit anything that looks off, and save when you are ready.

Tips & troubleshooting

If analysis fails with an OpenAI error, confirm billing is active and the key was copied completely (no extra spaces).
Revoke or rotate keys anytime from the OpenAI API keys page, then save a new key in Yur Home.
Monitor spend under Usage on the OpenAI platform.
